If you work in housing, social care, probation or homelessness support in Birmingham, you already know the hardest part of the job is rarely identifying that someone needs accommodation. It’s finding a provider with the right placement, at the right time, who will actually come back to you.

This page is intended to make that easier. It sets out who we can accommodate, what we need from you, and what happens after a referral reaches us.

Who we work with?

MKM Housing has provided supported and shared accommodation across Birmingham since 2020. We work alongside registered providers, housing associations and local authority teams, and we take referrals directly from professionals including:

  • Local authority housing options and homelessness teams
  • Adult social care and social workers
  • Mental health teams and community support services
  • Probation and through-the-gate services
  • Hospital discharge and reablement teams
  • Homelessness charities and voluntary sector organisations

Who we can accommodate?

We provide accommodation for adults who need a safe, stable place to live with an appropriate level of support around them. That includes people moving on from temporary or emergency accommodation, people leaving hospital or custody without a stable address, and people whose current housing has broken down.

What we need in a referral

The more complete the referral, the faster we can give you a clear answer. Please include:

  • Client name, date of birth and current location
  • A summary of support needs and any risk information relevant to a shared living environment
  • Details of the support package in place, and which agency will be providing ongoing support
  • Benefit status and any income details relevant to the placement
  • Your contact details and those of any other agency involved
  • Whether the need is urgent, and any date the client must move by

Complete risk information is genuinely helpful rather than a barrier. It allows us to place someone in a property and a mix of residents where the placement is likely to work — which is better for the client than a placement that breaks down in three weeks.

What happens after you refer

  • Acknowledgement — we confirm receipt and tell you who is handling the referral
  • Assessment — we review the referral against current availability and the existing residents in each property.
  • Response — we come back to you with either an offer, a request for more information, or a clear decline with the reason.
  • Viewing and sign-up — where a placement is offered, we arrange a viewing and complete the paperwork with the client and their support worker.
  • Move-in and ongoing contact — the client moves in and you have a named contact for anything that arises afterwards.

If we cannot accommodate someone, we will say so quickly rather than leaving a referral open. A fast no is more useful to you than a slow maybe.
